TASK GroupA client enters TASK group after successful completion of the 10 week “beginnings” class. Ideally, that same individual has reached a satisfactory level of recognition of need and proper insight into the nature of his addiction. He or she openly identifies themselves as an addict and is prepared to invest into a one year commitment for the particular TASK group. TASK groups are currently offered on Tuesday evenings between 6:00pm and 7:30pm, Wed Eve between 7:45 pm and9:15pm and Thursday between 6:00pm and 7:30pm. The centerpiece of the TASK group is the focus on the 7 TASKs of recovery as identified by Dr. Patrick Carnes Ph.D. His pioneering work led to a formalized “TASK Based” approach to the early treatment of sex addiction. More specifically, Carnes developed 7 distinct methods or “TASKs” the client needs to complete before he or she can enter long term, contented sobriety. These TASKs are presented to the client in a homework and group fashion. The client receives specific written assignments linked to a given task. The results of these assignments are reviewed in group with each group member offering feedback while also working on their own assignments. In addition to the specific TASKs and associated homework processed in group, more traditional group therapy elements are also utilized. For example, “check ins” and client generated/therapist facilitated process is also employed. Successful completion of the TASK group is measured by resolution of all TASKs as well as one year of abstinence from all “bottom line behaviors” (BLBs are those sexualized behaviors which has caused the individual the most significant level of unmanageability and pain. It is those behaviors that one learns to abstain from and becomes the centerpiece of their addiction and subsequent sobriety.). It is important to point out that many clients find the personal rewards of TASK group go well beyond a one year commitment. Subsequently, STAR has seen clients stay in TASK for as long as 2 to 3 years. |
